Museum professionals from Almaty have completed a professional internship in South Korea to study modern approaches to museum management and the preservation of cultural heritage, QazMonitor reports, citing the Culture Department of Almaty city.
The training took place in Seoul and Gyeongju at leading museums and cultural institutions. The program was organized free of charge by the Seoul Museums Association as part of broader efforts to expand international cooperation in the cultural sector.
During the internship, Almaty specialists studied key standards of contemporary museum practice, including collection registration and storage, maintaining optimal climate conditions in exhibition and storage areas, restoration and conservation techniques, and safety requirements for transporting cultural assets.
The Kazakh delegation visited major museums and heritage sites, including the National Museum of Korea, the National Folk Museum, the Seoul Museum of History, museums dedicated to King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the National Palace Museum of Korea, the Gyeongju National Museum, and Gyeongbokgung Palace, as well as several specialized museum spaces and historical complexes.
Special attention was given to the experience of managing the open-air archaeological complex in Gyeongju, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Participants examined modern approaches to preserving cultural heritage under conditions of high tourist traffic.
According to the Almaty Culture Department, cooperation between the museum associations of Almaty and Seoul is intended to be long-term. The partnership is based on a memorandum signed in 2022, under which the exhibition “Almaty – the Pearl of the Great Steppe” was held in Seoul. In 2024, Almaty hosted the Seoul Museum of History exhibition “The Charm of Seoul.”
