Kazakh game development studio Cyber Temple, a participant of Astana Hub, has released its game DarkSwitch. The project is already being compared to global hits in the genre. The game’s music was composed by Japanese composer Akira Yamaoka, known for his work on the Silent Hill series. For Kazakhstan’s gaming industry, this marks one of the most notable collaborations with a globally recognized artist.
The project has already attracted significant international attention, with more than 230,000 users adding it to their wishlists before release. DarkSwitch entered the top 5 most anticipated games of the week in its genre and ranked 8th among the most anticipated city-builders globally.
DarkSwitch is a city-building simulator and economic strategy game set in a dark fantasy world. The player’s goal is to ensure the survival of a settlement by building a city around massive trees that protect inhabitants from a deadly approaching mystical fog. The game combines a detailed setting, distinctive characters, and a narrative in which decisions affect not only city development but also the fate of individual characters.
According to CEO and founder Alexey Nazarov, DarkSwitch was developed by a multinational team of more than 50 specialists, over half of whom are from Kazakhstan. The team also includes developers from CIS countries, Spain, Poland, Serbia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Japan.
A key feature of the project is its vertical city architecture: limited space requires the construction of multi-layered infrastructure. The game includes more than 80 types of buildings and several technological tiers. Special attention was given to the art direction, with all visuals created by hand, enhancing the project’s unique style and atmosphere.
The game targets highly competitive premium markets. It currently supports six localization languages: English, French, German, Chinese, Russian, and Polish, as well as two voice-over languages: English and Russian. As part of its global strategy, the studio is also working on a planned Kazakh-language localization. The team emphasizes that they want players worldwide to see the flag of Kazakhstan every time they download the game.
The release of DarkSwitch highlights the next stage in the development of Kazakhstan’s game industry, showing the emergence of developers capable of building globally competitive products and attracting international audiences.
