On October 29, a three-day national seminar on aligning key strategic documents in biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and greenhouse gas reduction began in Astana. The event is supported by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), bringing together over 150 participants from government agencies, international and public organizations, academia, and civil society.

The seminar serves as a platform to coordinate major national frameworks — the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, and Kazakhstan’s Ninth National Communication, combined with the Second Biennial Transparency Report.

Andrey Kim, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife, noted that Kazakhstan continues to fulfill its commitments under the Paris Agreement, strengthening climate resilience and reducing emissions. According to him, the draft Concept for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity for 2025–2035 has been completed and will serve as a key national policy document for biodiversity protection.

“When nature becomes the core of development, we find solutions that simultaneously preserve ecosystems, strengthen economic resilience, and improve people’s quality of life. It is important that national development strategies take into account the interests of all population groups, including women, who play a key role in environmental protection and sustainable natural resource management. The presented gender analysis and best practices for women’s participation are a step toward a more inclusive and equitable environmental policy,” said Sukhrob Khojimov, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Kazakhstan.

The seminar features expert sessions on adaptation in water, agriculture, and forestry sectors, as well as discussions on climate risk assessment, financing mechanisms, and the integration of nature-based solutions. Special attention is given to gender analysis and the participation of women in sustainable natural resource management.
