Almaty Zoo has summed up the results of the eco-initiative held from January 8 to 18, QazMonitor reports.
During this period, city residents were able to bring fresh New Year fir trees, spruces, and pines to the zoo for use in animal habitats.
The collected conifer trees were used in different ways: for some hoofed animals they became treats, while for monkeys, tigers, bears, and leopards they were turned into enrichment toys. Branches and needles were also used as soft bedding for martens, hamsters, hedgehogs, and porcupines.
Over 50 people took part in the campaign, including several flower shops. It was also noted that three of the donated trees had intact root systems and are planned to be replanted on the zoo’s grounds.
Akzhamy Elemanova, Head of the Scientific and Methodological Department of Almaty Zoo, thanked participants and media representatives for their active support, stressing that conifer trees serve animals not only as food but also as an important enrichment tool that stimulates exploratory behavior.
Zoo officials noted that the “Return Your Tree” campaign once again demonstrated that caring for nature and animals can be simple and accessible. Similar initiatives are planned in the future, encouraging residents to adopt a responsible and environmentally friendly approach after the holiday season.
