The Almaty Zoo has received a pair of Salvador’s monitor lizards (Varanus salvadorii), QazMonitor reports.
These rare reptiles, also known as crocodile monitors, occur naturally only in New Guinea.
The pair, both over 10 years old, arrived from Indonesia and has already adapted to the new conditions. Their terrarium is designed to replicate the natural habitat with high temperature and humidity.
“The reptiles feel great and are actively exploring the terrarium. I hope they will enjoy living here and have a long and healthy life,” said Alexander Gurnev, head of the Exotarium department and a herpetologist.
Visitors can observe the reptiles in the zoo’s Exotarium section and learn how monitor lizards use their distinctive forked tongues to locate prey.
