Artificial intelligence will assist drivers in Karagandy in locating available parking spaces using surveillance cameras and computer vision technology. The news was announced during a visit by regional akim Yermaganbet Bulekpayev to the Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University, according to the regional administration’s press service.
During the visit, the head of the region was shown developments by university researchers and students, including drones for monitoring hydraulic structures, systems for assessing the technical condition of mines and quarries, 3D printers, and smart city solutions. Konstantin Ilnitsky, head of the regional department of informatization, public services, and archives, spoke about the implementation of the Smart Region concept, noting that AI is helping to monitor road conditions, manage traffic lights, and track the inventory of green spaces.
“We are working on a new project that will make life easier for drivers. Using city cameras, the system detects available parking spaces and transmits the data to navigation applications. It proved effective during testing,” explained Konstantin Ilnitsky.
Akim of the Karagandy region Yermaganbet Bulekpayev instructed officials to develop a regional plan for artificial intelligence development.
“We are entering a new industrial stage where technology and artificial intelligence form the foundation of the economy. Our enterprises already use digital twins, computer vision algorithms, and automation systems. These technologies help increase productivity, improve environmental performance, and reduce costs, making the region’s industry more sustainable and competitive,” he said.
The Abylkas Saginov Karagandy Technical University has also joined the AI-Sana national program, which helps students master the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and AI entrepreneurship. The program aims to train graduates capable of launching startups to address industry challenges and apply their knowledge in practice.
