The new city of Alatau City will be developed according to ISO 37120: Sustainable Cities and Communities, an international standard that measures urban quality across indicators such as ecology, transport, digital services, and social infrastructure, the Committee for Technical Regulation and Metrology reported.

Earlier, Astana was certified under the same standard in 2024. The capital became the first city in Central Asia to receive ISO 37120 status.

In October 2025, Sergio Mujica, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), paid his first official visit to Kazakhstan. During a meeting with Minister of Trade and Integration Arman Shakkaliyev, they discussed expanding cooperation, including plans to establish a National Reference and Testing Center for Artificial Intelligence. The center will feature an AI Standards Hub — a lab and certification facility that will help implement ISO standards in AI, blockchain, and digital technologies.

“Kazakhstan has already approved 18 related standards and is ready to become a platform for international collaboration in this field. Environmental standards are also part of the agenda,”

 the committee noted.

During the meeting, it was announced that Kazakhstan is becoming ISO’s regional hub for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. This fall, Kanat Tokushev will assume the role of Regional ISO Officer, coordinating interaction with countries across the region.

Sergio Mujica emphasized that Kazakhstan is an important ISO partner in the region, noting that its experience in sustainable development and digital transformation could serve as a model for other Central Asian countries.
