Kazakhstan has become the first country in Central Asia and one of the top ten countries in the WHO European Region to achieve the target of reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 25% by 2025. The World Health Organization recognized this progress as an important achievement in strengthening public health.
The result was driven by measures to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases. From 2017 to 2024, 85 stroke centers were established in Kazakhstan, contributing to a reduction in mortality and disability.
In the first nine months of 2025, 39,447 patients received care at these centers. The in-hospital mortality rate was 11.3%, one of the lowest in recent years. The share of thrombolysis procedures for ischemic stroke reached 6% (1,872 procedures), and neurosurgical activity was 5%.
The stroke service is coordinated by the Republican Stroke Coordination Center at the National Coordination Center for Emergency Medicine, which provides methodological support to 85 centers, including 32 third-level centers, 30 second-level centers, and 23 medical facilities with stroke beds.
To mark World Stroke Day, an open-house event was held on October 29 in Astana at the National Coordination Center for Emergency Medicine. The event was organized together with the Salidat Kairbekova National Research Center for Health Development with the support of WHO.
The program included free health screenings, blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose checks, consultations with specialists, and distribution of information materials on stroke prevention.
