Kazakhstan will build its second nuclear power plant in the Almaty region, with Zhambyl District designated as the construction site, QazMonitor reports. The decision was formalized in a government decree signed on 26 January.
Earlier, local residents expressed support for the construction of the new plant in Ulken, Zhambyl District.
China’s CNNC is expected to lead the consortium for the project. During a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev described CNNC as a “reliable strategic partner” for Kazakhstan’s nuclear energy development.
