More than 2 million trees will be planted in Almaty by 2030 as part of a large-scale urban greening program, QazMonitor reports.

A new dendrological master plan is currently being developed based on updated data and forest pathology assessments. According to the latest inventory conducted in 2018–2019, the city had more than 4.3 million trees. The new document will define approaches to restoring, renewing and further developing Almaty’s green fund. Authorities expect to complete the plan this year.

After its approval, landscaping and reconstruction of green areas will be carried out in accordance with the new plan starting in 2027.

At the same time, tree renewal efforts continue under a five-year program launched in 2022. As part of street reconstruction projects, large mature trees 5–6 meters tall and shrubs adapted to urban conditions are being planted in stages.

In parallel, the city is implementing a program to plant 2.5 million green spaces by 2030. Between 2023 and 2025, more than 1 million plants have already been planted. Large-scale planting of mature trees began in 2025. By 2030, officials aim to increase green space to 15 square meters per capita.

Since 2020, trees have also undergone chemical and biological treatment. According to authorities, the infestation rate has been reduced to 20–22%.
