Researchers at Satbayev University have developed a new technology for using fiber-reinforced concrete in mechanical engineering, QazMonitor reports.

As part of the Zhas Galym grant program, young scientists produced a prototype casing for a centrifugal pump made entirely of composite materials, without the use of metal.

According to the university, traditional metal pump casings offer high strength but are heavy, complex to manufacture, and prone to vibration. As an alternative, the research team proposed using fiber-reinforced concrete combined with carbon fiber.

The project, titled “Technology for Manufacturing a Pump Casing from Carbon Fiber”, was led by Akzharkyn Igbayeva, senior lecturer at the Department of Technological Machines and Gas Turbine Units.

Test results showed that fiber-reinforced concrete pump casings demonstrate high resistance to dynamic loads, corrosion resistance, and potentially longer service life compared to metal counterparts. The technology also reduces vibration and noise while simplifying the production process.

The development may be applied in mechanical engineering, the mining and metallurgical sector, transport engineering, and other industries where centrifugal pumps are used and improved operational performance is required.
