Yulia Putintseva has reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career, setting a new personal best at a Grand Slam, QazMonitor reports.
In the third round, Kazakhstan’s second-ranked player defeated Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez (No. 112 WTA). The match lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes and ended with a 6:3, 6:7(3), 6:3 victory for Putintseva.
Putintseva was close to winning in straight sets, leading 6:5 and serving for the match in the second set, but dropped the game and lost the tie-break. In the deciding set, she regained control and closed out the match.
Previously, Putintseva’s best result at the Australian Open was reaching the third round, which she achieved in 2016, 2020, 2021, and last season.
In the fourth round, she will face either world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini of Italy or world No. 27 Iva Jovic of the United States.
