Second Winter Olympic title in Kazakhstan's independent history

Qazaqstan Monitor: Shaidorov Wins Olympic Gold at Milano 2026

Mikhail Shaidorov won the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy, QazMonitor reports.

After the short program, the Kazakh figure skater ranked fifth with a score of 92.94 points. In the free skate, he received 198.64 points, bringing his total to 291.58. His program included five quadruple jumps.

Based on the combined results, Shaidorov secured first place.

Yuma Kagiyama of Japan took silver with 280.06 points, while Shun Sato, also of Japan, finished third with 274.90.

The victory marks Kazakhstan’s second gold medal in the history of its participation in the Winter Olympic Games as an independent nation. The country’s first gold was won by cross-country skier Vladimir Smirnov in 1994.

It is also Kazakhstan’s first Olympic gold medal in figure skating. The previous best result in the sport was Denis Ten’s bronze medal in 2014.
