The Zhetysu Region Akimat reported that a new park has opened in the city of Sarkan, covering six hectares and preserving the area’s natural landscape. The park features newly planted trees and animal sculptures that reflect the flora and fauna of the Zhungar Alatau National Park.
Landscaping work began after the establishment of the Zhetysu Region. The park now includes benches, lighting, a sports ground, paved walkways, and a renovated bridge across the Sarkan River.
At the park’s entrance, a Densaulyk (“Health”) embankment has been created, featuring a stage with an amphitheater for 400 visitors. Around 1,100 trees and shrubs have been planted — including blue spruces, pines, and thujas. Two observation decks provide views of the park and the Zhungar Alatau Mountains.
“We are working together with Zhungar Alatau National Park, one of the region’s key tourist attractions. The park will serve as a kind of mini-botanical garden, and we are now creating a third viewing platform with a winding ‘snake-shaped’ path,” said Sarkan Akim Amantai Orynbekov. “Our goal is to preserve this natural park for future generations as a symbol of the region’s beauty, culture, and history.”
A drip irrigation system has been installed to water the greenery. Future plans include building an all-season ice rink and parking lot, as well as adding more trees and small architectural features.
“As children, we used to come to the river to see the huge white stones — we’d play hide-and-seek and climb them. Our parents brought guests here for walks. Those stones have many legends and stories tied to them; people say they’re about a century old. It’s wonderful that this place has been modernized while keeping its natural character. The park turned out beautiful and unique — something our city can truly be proud of.”
The regional akimat added that there are currently 132 parks, squares, and alleys across the Zhetysu Region, covering a total area of 296.3 hectares.
